DPMS's Joey Garrett Wins Reflections National Award of Merit
Draper Park Middle 8th grader Joey Garrett learned this week she has received
a National Award of Merit from the National PTA's Reflections program. She won in the Literature category for her essay, "Day by Day."
This past year, the National PTA received submissions from more than 5,000 PTAs and Joey's submission rose to the top. Only 200 students nationwide are being recognized at the national level.
She will be honored at the 2019 National PTA Awards & Reflections Celebration on June 22 in Columbus, Ohio. Reflections winners in attendance will receive their medallions on the red carpet and take part in an art-making activity prior to the award celebration.
Additionally, her essay will be part of a traveling exhibit for the 2018-2019 program year Heroes Around Me that begins in January 2020 in Washington, D.C., and will conclude June 2020 in Louisville, Kentucky.
For the past 50 years, National PTA’s Reflections program has helped students explore their own thoughts, feelings and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful in school and in life.
Joey, the daughter of MaryBeth and Steve Garrett, is the first DPMS Viking to be honored at the national level in the Reflections program.
