Heavy Backpacks: More Than Just a Nuisance
Story and photo by Avery Heitson
Backpacks are becoming too heavy for students, because there are too many supplies to carry, and throughout the school year, lockers aren’t used as often as they should be.
“Our backpacks are way too heavy,” said Samantha Curtis, a 7th grade student.
According to the activetimes, your backpack shouldn’t weigh more than 10-15 percent of your body weight. Otherwise, the spinal cords in one’s body may compress and put students in pain.
“Heavy backpacks might actually make you shorter,” states livestrong.com.
Especially important to shorter kids, lighter backpacks make a difference because it affects your posture. Kidshealth.org states that students tend to lean forward to balance the weight, which will affect your posture in the future.
“The main solution to this problem is to use your lockers,” said Christina Stenten, a 7th grade science teacher.
