'Close Your Door Policy' to Help Improve Tardy Problem
At the end of each school year, the Draper Park Building Leadership Team (BLT) and the Positive Behavior Instructional Supports Committee (PBIS) study our schoolwide data. One item of data which stood out was the number of tardies we saw from the first day of school through January. See the table below. As professionals we are always looking for ways to improve teaching and learning. Decreasing the number of tardies will assist in student learning since they will be present in class at the beginning of each period.
As you look at the table please specifically note the number of tardies for first period.
From the first day of school until Feb. 2, 2017
Data from Skyward
Both school based professional teams started to brainstorm ideas to solve the tardy problem.
NEW THIS YEAR: DPMS has instituted a “Close Your Door Policy.”
The first step to reduce tardiness is to institute a close your door policy. This means all classroom doors are closed when the bell rings. Class begins as soon as the bell rings. If a student is late, they are late, and sign in at the back of the classroom in a tardy notebook.
A close your door policy accomplishes a few important goals:
• It minimizes classroom interruptions for students who have shown up on time and are prepared for class.
• It establishes clear, consistent expectations for students. Bells have been added back into the school day so students and teachers will consistently know when each class period begins.
• It allows late students to enter the class, sign the tardy notebook, and get seated and started quicker.
The school is asking for help from our students and their families to win back the instructional minutes lost due to tardiness. Please communicate with your child’s teachers with individual needs that may interfere with our new policy. We appreciate your support and value every minute of every school day!
